The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program (pronounced Wooeee) is an agreement between 160 colleges and universities, across 16 states in the Western U.S. region, to offer deep savings on non-resident tuition rates. Students who qualify for the program are guaranteed to pay no more than 150% of the institution's resident tuition.

Each school sets its own requirements for eligibility and admissions. Some, such as the University of Idaho, have few limitations while others may restrict majors, cap the number of students per state, set minimum GPA requirements, or impose special application deadlines. You are highly encouraged to contact the schools you are interested in early in the year to discuss their WUE admission requirements and benefits.

• Search for WUE-eligible schools that provide degrees and certifications in your intended major.

• Call each school's financial aid office to ask about the process to apply and to ensure your major is eligible.

• You will apply directly to the educational institution.

• Additional scholarship money may be automatically awarded based on GPA. For example, at the University of Idaho, students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 receive an additional $2,000 scholarship on top of the nearly $16,000 tuition reduction.

• In some cases, out-of-state tuition may be less expensive than in-state tuition with a WUE award.

Washington state provides one of the most generous financial aid programs in the country, yet Washington students missed out on $50 million in 2022 by failing to file the FAFSA.

In order to qualify for free money in the form of state grants, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. No separate applications are required for this state-based money. Eligibility and award amounts are determined by financial need, which is based on household income, and vary between each school.
